Skogur: A Mountain Escape in the Heart of the Ukrainian Carpathians

Hidden among the spruce forests of Yablunytsia, Skogur is more than a mountain resort. It is a place designed for slow mornings, panoramic views, wellness, good food and the simple pleasure of doing absolutely nothing.

Some places are made for sightseeing. Others are made for slowing down.

Hidden among the spruce forests of Yablunytsia in the Ukrainian Carpathians, Skogur is the kind of mountain destination where the landscape is not simply something you look at — it becomes part of the entire experience.

There are mountains outside the window, forest trails just a few steps away, warm wooden cottages, panoramic terraces, outdoor wellness experiences and long evenings when there is nowhere you need to rush.

Welcome to Skogur — a mountain escape designed around nature, silence and the simple pleasure of having time.

A Carpathian hideaway surrounded by spruce forest

Skogur sits in Yablunytsia, surrounded by the characteristic spruce forests of the Carpathians. The resort is positioned at around 457 metres above sea level, with views towards the surrounding mountain ranges and the wider Carpathian landscape.

But the location is about more than the view.

The forest changes the atmosphere completely. In the morning, the air feels cool and fresh. During the day, the sound of the wind moves through the trees. In the evening, the mountains slowly disappear into the mist and the forest becomes almost completely quiet.

It is precisely this connection with nature that defines Skogur. The architecture, materials and spaces are designed to feel like a continuation of the landscape rather than something placed against it.

The cottages are part of the experience

Skogur currently includes 103 cottages, created for different types of stays — from intimate escapes for two to larger spaces designed for families and groups.

The architecture follows a simple idea: make the outside world part of the inside.

Large windows bring the forest and mountains into the living spaces, while terraces create an easy transition between the warmth of the cottage and the fresh Carpathian air.

Inside, the atmosphere continues through natural textures and materials. Handmade ceramics, woollen blankets and warm wooden surfaces give the interiors a tactile, almost nostalgic character.

It feels less like checking into a conventional hotel and more like temporarily having your own little house in the mountains.

Start the morning slowly

A good Skogur morning does not need an itinerary.

Wake up without an alarm. Open the curtains. Make coffee. Step onto the terrace and watch the mountains while the forest slowly wakes up.

For guests staying in the cottages, breakfast is included in selected accommodation formats, while the resort’s restaurant provides another option for starting the day with a mountain view.

The whole concept encourages a slower rhythm — the kind of morning that feels almost impossible to recreate in the middle of a busy city.

Wellness, but in the middle of nature

One of the strongest parts of the Skogur experience is its approach to wellness.

The Skogur Wellness Center combines traditional bathing rituals with modern relaxation experiences. The Rosa bathing complex includes steam rooms, bathing rituals, massages and an outdoor jacuzzi.

There is also a contrast experience with cold mountain water — a simple but memorable way to wake up the body after time spent in the heat.

And then there is the forest.

Yoga takes place outdoors among the spruce trees. Meditation and breathing practices become very different when the soundtrack is made by wind and birds rather than traffic. For those looking for something more unusual, Skogur also offers nail standing sessions as part of its wellness programme.

The idea is not to fill every hour with activities. It is to give the body a reason to slow down.

A panoramic pool with the mountains in front of you

For a more relaxed afternoon, head to the outdoor panoramic pool.

The heated pool overlooks the Carpathian slopes, turning a simple swim into a mountain experience. There is a terrace around the pool where guests can relax, order drinks or light dishes and simply stay outside for a little longer.

Close by, there is also a children’s area and a lake with a bathing tub, making this part of the resort particularly convenient for families.

But even without swimming, the pool area is worth visiting. With the mountains stretching beyond the water, it is one of those places where you naturally reach for your phone to capture the view.

Lunch with a view at The Gust 925

Food becomes part of the landscape at The Gust 925 Restaurant.

Located at an elevation of 925 metres, the restaurant features a panoramic terrace looking towards the Chornohora mountain range and Hoverla.

It is especially atmospheric later in the day, when the light begins to change and the mountains become softer in the distance.

The restaurant focuses on contemporary cuisine built around local ingredients, while its location makes even a simple breakfast or lunch feel like an occasion.

And if you would rather stay in your cottage, selected dishes can also be delivered directly to your terrace.

For those who cannot sit still

Skogur is peaceful, but it is not designed only for doing nothing.

The surrounding area offers trekking routes and forest paths for those who prefer to explore on foot. The resort also mentions regular walking routes of around 4–5 kilometres as part of its wellness experience.

There are sports areas around the resort, while more adventurous guests can explore the surrounding landscape on longer walks and outdoor activities.

One of the most atmospheric spots is the suspended walking bridge among the spruce trees. It is designed not only as a viewpoint but also as a place for a slow walk, a photograph or even a romantic moment.

There is plenty for families too

Skogur is not exclusively an adults-only retreat.

The Skogur Kids Camp is designed for children aged 4–12 and combines outdoor adventures, creative workshops, games and contact with animals.

Children can join themed activities, mini-hikes and sports games, visit the small animal area with rabbits, goats and chickens, or spend the evening watching a movie outdoors, roasting marshmallows and sitting around a campfire.

There are also children’s play areas across the resort, including climbing structures, tree houses and outdoor activities.

That makes Skogur an interesting option for families who want a mountain trip without giving up the possibility of having some quiet time of their own.

Find your own place to slow down

Perhaps the best thing about Skogur is that there is no single correct way to experience it.

You can spend the morning hiking through the forest, the afternoon in the wellness centre and the evening over dinner with a panoramic view.

Or you can do almost nothing.

Stay in your cottage. Read a book. Make another coffee. Sit outside and watch the weather move across the mountains.

That is what makes the destination appealing: Skogur gives you enough things to do, but never makes you feel that you have to do them all.

Why Skogur is worth adding to your Carpathian itinerary

If you are looking for a place in the Ukrainian Carpathians that combines nature, comfortable accommodation, wellness, food and outdoor experiences in one destination, Skogur offers a surprisingly complete escape.

It works for a romantic weekend, a family holiday, a trip with friends or simply a few days away from the noise of the city.

The mountains provide the backdrop. The forest provides the atmosphere. The cottages provide privacy. And everything else — from the pool and wellness centre to the restaurant, trekking routes and panoramic locations — gives you reasons to stay a little longer.

And maybe that is the real luxury of Skogur.

Not having more things to do.

Having more time to enjoy the things that are already there.

One last look before you leave

When the sun begins to disappear behind the Carpathian ridges, take one last walk through the forest.

Listen to the trees. Look towards the mountains. Let the evening air replace the noise of the city.

For a destination built around the idea of finding your “place of strength”, Skogur has a surprisingly simple message:

Slow down. Breathe deeper. Stay a little longer.
